There were actually three of us waiting, so I did not get bored at all. A few more minutes Ms. Portia approached us to come with her at a meeting room near the reception area. It's a familiar room for me because it was the same room where Ms. Naomi, also from the Human Resource Department, talked with me around three weeks ago during my job offer. It only took me less than a day to know that I pass the interview process and will proceed to the job offer. A few more days, I already sign the contract! To sum up, that's less than a week. Back to the orientation day, Ms. Portia informed us about our workplaces, company rules, regulations, benefits, and everything we need to know on our first day. That time I was able to learn how big the company is, and how lucky I am to join them. After the orientation, I was approached by my new supervisor -- Ma'am Joy Salvador. She then introduced me to her team, my new team. I was surprised when I met them, because there are only 5 of us in the team that day and boys dominates us. Later I knew that one more girl team mate is on leave because she had been spotting a few days ago and need to rest for a while. Before I got to sit on my new post, Ma'am Joy introduced me to the rest of the IT teams one after another. It was a huge IT team broken down into different functions. Even at first glance I already knew they are nice and fun people. I told myself "I'll enjoy here."

After all the introductions I already got the chance to feel my new post. I still don't have a PC that time, but I was given a B&M mug that is exclusive to employees only, my "pedestal" where I will put all my stuff, my files rack, and chair that looks like an executive chair. Just a few hours of fixing my post, I was called by the IT Manager. It's time for me to have a "hand scan". We use a pin number and our hand to login. A few more times and I went back to my post. Now I have my PC, oh it was not a PC but a laptop. It's temporary though. My supervisor instructed me to familiarize myself on the intranet facility that they are testing from time to time. It is a big intranet site, I got tired just by browsing the pages! Then I was given the email account and login accounts for the rest of the employee sites like the payslip, leave, newsletter, and room reservation. A few more browsing and it's lunch time. Good thing I brought "baon" because even if there's a pantry, I'm still not sure if there is a canteen in the office. I had lunch with the rest of the team along with my co-employees from other teams. I'm right when I said to myself that they are nice and fun to be with. They took care of me well on my first day, I didn't had a bad time. Not a single moment. A few more minutes and hours have passed and I did not notice that it's already 6:00 PM. It going home time. Oh, it rained on the first time that I am going home from my new office! I had a hard time looking for taxi, and the Fort bus are already full. Then I remembered that we have a shuttle bus too! Ah, I was saved! I was able to experience riding on the B&M bus for the first time on my first day. I am relaxed upto the time I have to go out of it when it reached EDSA-Ayala. I went home that day having the good memories of my first day even if I still miss my previous co-employees in DeepArctic.

Soon I'll be celebrating my third month in Baker & McKenzie. That is also the time of my first evaluation. I just hope I'll have good results. Working in B&M is tiring because they really have lots of work to do, but I enjoy everyone of them. I feel at home even on my first, second, third month in the company. I love my work, and I love being with my co-employees. I hope I can stay longer.

Reasons Why Employees Leave the Company

I've worked to different jobs and companies already in the past four year after college. I've talked, known and worked with different people -- from my boss to co-employees to clients. Among them, I stayed the longest on my previous job. That was for a year and two months. Most of the time I spent only 6 to 10 months in a company. My reasons are just one of the few if you'll ask me why I left the company and searched for a better one. There are actually many reasons why an employee leave a company. And believe me it's not always a negative reason. But what really are those reasons? In here I list few of them (this might help you compose your resignation letter soon...):

Top on the list: "another company offered a better compensation or package with lots of good and visible benefits". Yes, that is always at the top. Who does not want to have a good pay? You cannot work if you are problematic on where to get money to pay your bills, right? People work hard at their best to be paid fairly or much.

"Career growth.", is this for real? It surely is! This is also the safest answer during interviews so don't be surprised. Some companies give trainings, promotions, more projects with advance technologies and tasks that can help us become more mature and knowledgeable about our skills and fields. It is not always about money, our minds must be fed also.

"Employees leave because of managers not because of work." I have read this in another blog and made me realize that it is very true. I was able to last for months on my previous jobs because I have good pay, great found friends, and I love my work. But I forgot all of those good reasons whenever I remember my boss who always say, "If not for me you will not have your work. Your earnings are your debts to me. I can replace you easily. Your nothing to me."

"Very tiring and exhausting job. In short, all work no play!" We are only human, we need time to relax. Work is not everything that we do in our life. An imbalance workplace is not healthy at all.

"I don't see my worth in the company." Even on our childhood days, we are delighted whenever our parents or other people recognize our talents and skills. We enjoy our job more when we are appreciated by our boss or even our co-employees. It is our ego that should be fed. If not we start to get tired of working and stop enjoying the job.

I always hope that the company that I will be joining welcome me like a family. Luckily, that hope is always granted. It is not a good feeling to be left out by your co-employees, even more your team mates! I'll feel paranoid if they'll think that I can't belong to their "circle". Who does not want to belong anyway?

It is not bad to leave your company as long as you still respect your boss, co-employees, and job even at your last day. How you will inform them about your decision is already on your own to make. It's time for you to think and decide before it could be too late for you to leave.

Patients Talk to Doctors Using E-mail

With the technology we have now, communicating using e-mail is not impossible anymore. We can reach our families, friends, classmates, and acquaintances wherever they may be. But when it comes to reaching out with our doctors through the electronic mail technology, it is somewhat impossible.

The Philippines is doing well when it comes to the latest technologies. But to use this communication tool for doctors and patients to be able to talk easier and faster? I don't think so. It's because not all of the doctors have their own Internet connection on their clinics and hospitals and some does not know how to use this tool either. Our hospitals and clinics are not well-equipped with their medical tools, what more with computers and Internet?

In the United States, 31 percent of doctors already uses e-mail to communicate with their patients in the first quarter of 2007. Although there are still arguments about the advantages and disadvantages of e-mailing the patient, we cannot deny that some of the doctors in USA believes that e-mail is a tool that they can use in communicating with their patients. 31 percent is still a good start, isn't it? I only wish Philippine doctors can also do this.

Read more of it from MSNBC...

All Time Favorite Ref Cake

Do you love eating sweets like chocolates? So it is easier for me and even you to make on your own and have this all time favorite cake everyday as you may want!

Let us list first what we will need to make a recipe of our favorite cake.
<menu>For the cream:

2 big can of All-Purpose Cream (I prefer Nestle Creme but you can also try other brands of your choice)

1 big can of Condensed Milk (I prefer Alaska Condense Milk but you can try something else, that depends on your taste)

Graham crackers (will depend on how thick you want on your ref cake)

Graham crushed (Optional)

For the toppings:
You can use fruits that are not hard to chew like:

Crushed Pineapple (I prefer Del Monte)

Ripe Mango sliced into little pieces

Peach

Banana

</menu>(You can also use candies and chocolates like Nips without crispies or nuts instead of fruits specially if it is for the kids.)

For additional flavoring:
Some wants the plain taste of the cream. But for some who likes different taste, you can try adding chocolate syrup or coffee to taste.

After you've decided on what ingredients to use, we move to making the ref cake. It's just as simple as 1-2-3 so you should never worry. The first step is to pour the 2 cans of Nestle Creme into a clean, dry bowl. Next, pour the Condensed Milk while stirring the mixture. Step aside the mixture and put the Graham crackers on the molding tray or container, they should be flatly lay outed on the tray. Pour enough amount of the mixture into the tray with Graham. Then put the sliced or crushed fruit(s) or candies on top of the cream mixture. Put again another layer of Graham above the cream or you can put crushed Graham instead if you want to make only one-layer ref cake. If you want to make more than a layer ref cake, continue doing steps four up to the last. Using this recipe you can make 1-2 trays of ref cakes.

That's it, enjoy your baking! I mean eating you ref cake.

Happy Birthday April Celebrants!

This month of April awaits us of birthday celebrations.

I'll start of with April Fools day birthday celebrant, Melvin Esguerra. He's no more kid, though! So there no balloons, clowns, party hats, etc. He preferred a more romantic and memorable birthday celebration with me of course. Tagaytay in the city of Batangas is the destination spot. I took a vacation leave with my work and made his birthday a very special one. We don't have maps, tour guides or something. For us, the trip should be an exciting adventure discovering one of the Philippines' pride! It is 10AM Philippine time when we went off his house and traveled to Pasay City here in Manila where we can find the bus that will take us to Tagaytay City. With luck we arrive just in time that the bus still have lots of vacant seats, so we've had a comfortable place. I sat beside the window because I always enjoy watching the view outside. At almost 11AM the bus departed from Pasay City station. I never felt boredom because I was watching Charlie's Angels Full Throttle from the bus' television, but Melvin slept (he easily gets to sleep when he feels cold) on our way. When we are about to pay the ticket, we don't know where we're gonna drop off. So the "konduktor" (the one giving the ticket and collecting the payment for the fare) told us to drop off to Oliveros. Upon our arrival at Oliveros, Melvin felt stomachaches not because of hunger but because he was inside the aircon bus for a long time. Luckily we saw Jollibee! And another luck, we saw Chowking fastfood! I bought him soup to ease his stomach pains. After sipping few tablespoons he's back to normal and we continued searching for Tagaytay's tourists spot. After going around the beautiful Tagaytay we bought some "pasalubong" for the family and friends. Then we got home safe, tired but definitely HAPPY.

Next on the list of the celebrants is Miguel Yeshua "Migo" Prino (sorry if I'd spell it wrong) who celebrated his very first birthday at Jollibee, Shangri-La Mall in Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City last April 12, 2008. He's really born on April 9, he just celebrated his birthday on that Saturday. I arrived late, as usual, they were playing games already. A few more minutes we were served with the food, for the adults it is the "big gutom meal" and for the chikitings it is the spaghetti meal with chocolate sundae. As we eat the Langhap Sarap Jollibee meals, Jollibee mascot was introduced by the hostess. Jollibee entered the party place dancing and jumping with his or her eyelids twinkling! As he appeared, all the kids are happier! I saw someone clapping his hands with joy, but take note his an adult! After all the dancing, jumping and singing, Jollibee gave his wishes to Migo. J0llibee wishes Migo to be "mapagmahal, mapagbigay, magandang lalaki kagaya ng Daddy?, at madasalin at may takot sa Diyos." Is Jollibee mascot a gay, because he always twinkles his eyelids unto Migo's Daddy? Anyway, the party ended very well and happy, with Jollibee getting the biggest gift of Migo, food or bag of the guest with him??? Oh, Jollibee's very playful! Well, he really makes us happy with that! He looks nice when he does that shy, sleepy look on his eyes. The guests are delighted for this very special occasion. Thanks to Mommy Jho and Daddy Gerald Prino for inviting me over!

Finally, the most awaited birthday celebration of the two handsome guys that I met a year ago came. Their birthday is on April 12 but we made the celebration earlier to give way to Migo's first birthday. The celebration was just simple when it was proposed by one of the senior celebrant -- Rodolfo Cerrada Jr.. But because there are two of them celebrating their birthdays in one day, the younger one proposed for a birthday celebration on the beach. It took me, Jennifer "Kleng" Corpin, Jennifer "Posh" Canhe, and the younger celebrant -- Adrian Torres, almost a month in preparation for this big event of the month. We organized on where to celebrate, that includes sleeping around 2-3AM just to search all over the web for beaches and/or resorts that can accommodate around 30 participants. The celebrants gave pledges to include on our budget and lessen the amount that we'll be giving for our shares, some of the guys who already left our employer gave their kind pledges that we used for the rooms that we rented. We've looked in Laguna, Batangas, and finally Bataan. Laguna suffered from thypoid outbreak that can be incurred on drinking water around March this year, because of that we removed Laguna on the list. We don't want to take risks with this. Next option is Batangas, where we found lots of beach resorts. But unfortunately all of them are fully-booked, so the only option left was in Bataan. No one among us knows or is familiar with Bataan, it is clearly an adventure for us. And so it is decided, Morong Star Beach Resort in Panibatuhan, Morong, Bataan is our destination! Bataan here we come!

That was April 5-6, 2008, a fine day to travel. The call time is set to 5-5:30AM and the vans will leave at exactly 6AM. But the most important person arrived at almost 7AM, guess who's that! We're already on our trip when I asked "Kuya Driver" on where is Sta.Rita exit. He did not answer me not give me a glimpse that he understand even hear my question. Maybe "Kuya Driver" is so shy? Or he's mute? OMG, deadma ako!!! And so I did not talk to him and we just continued traveling the North Luzon Expressway to pickup Leon at Sta.Rita exit, the toll way that costs us additional P60.00! And Leon was there bringing a couple of mineral water (so that's the payment for the toll fee huh?!) We are near SM Pampanga when "Kuya Driver" finally speaks clearly even if he's not asked to speak! He already smiles and laughs with us while Olem (the very funny, Olem! Hahaha!) tells us his jokes! A few more hours of travel and we think we are lost, we cannot find the star! Oh, I mean Morong Star. And so "magtanong" came with us, now we're saved! We asked "Manong Guard" and a kid riding a bike to where is Morong Star. We've passed a jungle and farm like views of Bataaan, drove up and down the hills like Jack and Jill. Finally, the moment of truth has come -- we are now at Morong Star Beach Resort.

The vans are parked first on the parking space allotted for us, good thing we have a reservation now, right Kleng? I immediately went to the cashier/customer service/admin/resort owner, Marie, but Marie is not there that moment. So I talked with her staff instead, while the other participants went to see the beach (no, they are not excited! It was just their first time, hahaha! ) At last I have the keys to the rooms, I hurriedly gave Kleng the keys and she lead them to the rooms. After that, Kleng and Posh went to the canteen/resto to order food for our lunch. They ordered Sinigang na Baboy, Steamed Tilapia, and Pork Sisig. Wow, sounds delicious! We made additional order of Fried Chicken for some diet-conscious folks. Most of us rested on our rooms when we arrived, because we are hungry too! Around 1PM I guess when a crew called our attention that the food is already ready, so we went to the canteen and sat on the prepared tables. Our excitement was cut when we learned that the crew was not calling us but other fellows instead, and so we waited for more minutes until we eat our very first food on the beach resort. Oh my at last the foods arrived! But wait! Where's the pork sisig? You're kidding, this is pork strips covered with scrambled eggs?! NO, you're not kidding? So this is really the pork sisig? Ah ok, on our hunger we just ate the food that was served even on our dismay. The fried chicken was served late, we're almost done eating when it was served! But at least we were sort of delighted when it was served, we were expecting it to be different from the rest. But why are we really expecting that anyway? To make it short, we were all disappointed by the food on the canteen. Need I elaborate more? We just enjoyed our stay by swimming on the beach and pool, and the guys played basketball after swimming. It was a long day, but the night is longer. We've had a long table prepared in front of the rooms that we rented, Posh brought Mudslide and mixed Vodka with 7Up, the guys bought a case of SanMig Light, and Chris brought Tequila Rose. For the "pulutan"? What else, they are Boy Bawang and Corn Bits with Muncher Green Peas?! Aside from that we have Cheese Ring care of Posh, it's her favorite by the way! We've had a long night drinking, taking pictures with Adrian's beautiful DLSR, talking about each other, and making fun with the jokes most of the boys tell! I just cannot forget the alibis Leon and Marvin told us. Washing your feet or going to pee, right guys? We ended the session around 12 midnight, all of us are sleepy then but we all look happy. Are you guys, happy? Because I really had fun that time, not on the beach but with the quality time I had with all of the participants.

Early Sunday, oh I'm still sleepy but I need to get up and wake up the others because we will go boating and go to the island nearby. We are all set, we brought our breakfast there. I was very scared while riding the boat, it is even frightful when we reach the middle part of the sea where the waves are becoming bigger and bigger. "Andito na tayo! Andito na tayo?" That's what I heard when we arrived on the island. The next thing they heard was "Ayokong bumaba, buhatin mo ko!" Hahaha! I was very afraid of all the see creatures and see weeds or algaes that I can see on the water. I was shouting because of fear, I was even holding Adrian's digicam! So Melvin cannot do anything but carry me. We had our breakfast on that island, it was more beautiful than that of Morong Star Beach Resort, but on the island we cannot do anything and go anywhere else. We just ate the food, took pictures, told more stories. We went back to the resort afterwards, but wait we were stuck on almost near the beach front. "Manong, anong nangyari?" So "Manong" restarted the bangka's motor and we continued to reach the shore. We then get ourselves ready to leave the resort.

On our way home before lunch time the following day, we decided to have lunch at Pampanga --- where the food specially sisig is the best! We've had a different route in going out from Bataan to Subic, the roads are smaller --- it can accommodate only one vehicle at a time I guess. But there's no turning back, it was a long road hiding in between a tall mountain and farm or trees --- if not a mountain, it's a cliff so high! "Oh God, please let us pass this never ending trail without another car driving on the opposite side of us." OMG, I don't want to die now! While our van was on a slanting road we met two other cars opposite of us, the road in front of us to steep going up and at our back is steeply going down. On our right is a cliff, on the left is a land with lots of trees. I should have taken pictures of us in that situation, but I was too nervous being seated in front and able to see how difficult to move the van from that phase. But "Kuya Driver" was great, he was able to take us out of that dying situation! Finally we're out of there, we arrived Pampanga around 1PM. We've had Chicharong Bulaklak, Lumpiang Shanghai, Caldereta, Inihaw na Liempo and the very famous Pork Sisig! At last we were able to eat true food. After this delicious lunch, we continued our travel home. One by one each of us were dropped off to our destinations and we got home safe and in one piece.

I hope next year we can see each other again and celebrate your birthdays to remember. "Promise hindi na tayo sa Morong Star!" :)

For you what is Quality Assurance?

Wow, this is the first topic on my blog since I created this last April 2005! And why did I choose this topic? It's simply because I'm currently working as a Software Quality Assurance Engineer in one of the software development companies in Makati City. Before I forgot, I'll be turning 1 year on April 16, 2008! Imagine I was able to live 1 year of my life in a here? Ok, enough about that and I'll go back to the main topic of this blog.

So for you what is Quality Assurance? Oh my, this has been asked to me many times on almost all the interviews that I've attended before. (And for sure even in the future!) Want to know my answer? It's just, "Quality Assurance is making sure that the project or application is developed and delivered on-time according to the specified requirements, functional, and bug-free."

But what is the correct definition of Quality Assurance? According to AskNumbers.com, "Quality Assurance makes sure the project will be completed based on the previously agreed specifications, standards and functionality required without defects and possible problems. It monitors and tries to improve the development process from the beginning of the project to ensure this. It is oriented to "prevention"." Actually, Quality Assurance is not just completing the agreed specifications, standards and functionalities. We can say that it also needs to follow a specific process before the completion can be attained. But of course the process should be based on the specifications and functionalities, and follow the standards. An application or project that passed quality assurance is a boost the credibility of a company. On recent days, quality assurance improves the company's processes and efficiency to have a better competition with others, and catch the defects of the applications or systems before they are delivered. Before, quality assurance was used during World War II to check and test if the munitions are working as they should be.

I've seen many definitions and explanations about what is Quality Assurance. All of them are correct, all explains Quality Assurance in different ways. But in the end all of the companies and individuals who uses quality assurance only have one goal --- that is to deliver functional systems that meets the specifications and standards with the best quality.

That ends it, but I'll do more next time!
